Weekend Wrap
It was another productive weekend from the Cubbies. Not only did they take 2 of 3 from the Reds, but the Brewers lost 3 of 4 vs. the Cardinals. The Cubs now are the closest they have been to 1st place since opening day…just .05 games back.
Notes: Kerry Wood’s return now looks to be on a fast track back to the Bigs. He is scheduled to pitch on Tuesday night for class AA Tennessee, and if all goes well he could join the Cubs by Thursday when the Mets come to town.
Don’t expect any big moves at the trade deadline. Addding Wood seems to be the biggest thing the Cubs will do. They, however, could make a bigger move at the end of August when more teams are eliminated from the races.
Carlos Zambrano continues to be lights out (he’s making himself millions with every appearance now) on the mound and at the plate. Big Z’s 3 for 4 yesterday raised his batting average to .291. It was also his 2nd 3-hit game this season.
